Privacy Policy
Last updated June 28, 2026
This policy explains what information Folio handles when you use our website and app, and why. It is written to be specific to how Folio actually works — not generic boilerplate. If anything here is unclear, email us at hello@folioclassics.com and we will explain it plainly.
Who we are
Folio ("Folio", "we", "us", "our") offers seven-minute narrated readings of public-domain literary classics. The service is operated by Akira Takashima, an individual sole proprietor based in Alberta, Canada. We are the data controller responsible for the limited information described below.

The short version
- There are no user accounts. You don't sign up, and we don't hold a profile on you.
- Your preferences and listening progress live in your own browser, not on our servers.
- We collect a small set of anonymous product events to understand whether the app is working and worth improving.
- Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your full card number.
- We do not sell personal data — to anyone, ever.
No accounts, and what's stored in your browser
Folio has no login or registration. Instead of keeping your data on our servers, the app stores what it needs locally in your browser using localStorage on your device. This typically includes:
- Premium status — whether your device has unlocked Folio Premium.
- Your library — the titles you've added or saved.
- Playback position — where you left off in a reading, and which titles you've finished.
- Preferences — your chosen voice (male or female), playback speed, and similar settings.
- Free-listen state — which title you've used as today's free pick, so the daily limit can reset.
Because this data lives on your device, clearing your browser storage, switching browsers, or using a different device will reset it — and you can erase it yourself at any time. We do not receive a copy of your library, your playback position, or your preferences.
Analytics we use
To understand how the app performs and where it falls short, we use two privacy-respecting analytics tools:
- PostHog — product analytics for a small set of in-app events.
- Cloudflare Web Analytics — aggregate, cookie-free traffic measurement for our pages.
The in-app events we capture are limited to a handful of actions that tell us whether the product is working:
- App opens
- Sample completions (finishing a reading)
- Paywall views
- Checkout clicks
- Purchases
We use this information only to improve Folio — to see which classics get finished, where people stop, and whether the paywall and checkout flow work. We do not use it to build advertising profiles, and we do not sell or rent it. These events do not include your name, email, or the contents of your library, and because there are no accounts, they are not tied to a personal identity we hold.
Payments
Folio Premium is an auto-renewing annual subscription (USD $24.99 per year, beginning with a 7-day free trial, cancellable anytime). Billing is processed entirely by Stripe, Inc. When you subscribe, your payment details are entered into Stripe's secure checkout and handled by Stripe — we never see or store your full card number. Stripe shares back with us only what we need to confirm a successful purchase and manage the subscription. Stripe's handling of your data is governed by its own privacy policy, available at https://stripe.com/privacy.
Cookies and local storage
Folio does not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. We rely on two things:
- Local storage on your device to remember your preferences, library, and progress (described above). This is essential to how the app functions offline as an installable web app.
- Analytics as described above — Cloudflare Web Analytics is cookie-free, and PostHog may set a limited identifier to count events without identifying you personally.
You can clear local storage and any analytics identifiers at any time through your browser's settings.
Data retention
Data held in your browser's local storage remains until you clear it or your browser removes it — we have no ability to reach into your device. Aggregate analytics events are retained only as long as they are useful for understanding product trends and are then aged out under our analytics providers' retention settings. Records related to a purchase (held by Stripe and reflected in our billing records) are kept as long as needed to provide the subscription and to meet tax and accounting obligations under Canadian law.
International visitors and your rights
Folio is operated from Alberta, Canada, and our analytics and payment providers may process data in Canada, the United States, and elsewhere. Wherever you are, you can ask us to access, correct, or delete personal information we hold about you. Because we hold very little — and nothing tied to a user account — many requests can be honoured simply by clearing the data on your own device.
- Canada (PIPEDA): you may request access to and correction of your personal information, and ask about how we handle it.
- EEA / UK (GDPR & UK GDPR): where applicable, you have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, and data portability, and may lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.
- California (CCPA/CPRA): where applicable, you have the right to know what we collect, to request deletion, and to not be discriminated against for exercising these rights. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under California law.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at hello@folioclassics.com. We may need to verify that a request relates to your data before acting on it.
Children
Folio is intended for a general adult audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will address it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Folio evolves or as the law requires. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. Significant changes will be made clear on this page. Continuing to use Folio after an update means you accept the revised policy.
