Terms of Service
Last updated June 28, 2026
These Terms of Service (the "Terms") govern your use of Folio — 7-Minute Classics, a web application and service ("Folio", "we", "us", or "our") operated by Akira Takashima, an individual sole proprietor based in Alberta, Canada. By opening, browsing, or listening on Folio, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.
1. Acceptance of these Terms
By accessing or using Folio in any way, you confirm that you have read, understood, and accepted these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you use Folio on behalf of another person, you confirm you are authorized to accept these Terms for them. We may update these Terms from time to time, as described in the "Changes to these Terms" section below.
2. What Folio is
Folio offers public-domain literary classics as short narrated audio — roughly seven minutes per title — that you can finish in a single spare moment. Please understand a few things about the content:
- Some works are complete; longer works are edited. Naturally short pieces (for example, Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart) are presented complete. Longer novels are carefully edited retellings that keep the arc and the finest passages — they are not the full, unabridged texts.
- Narration is AI-generated. Titles are read by a clear, consistent synthetic voice (male and female options are available). Folio does not use celebrity or human narrators, and does not imply that it does.
- The library and features may change. We may add, edit, or remove titles, voices, and features, and we may change or discontinue parts of the service, at any time.
3. Eligibility
Folio is intended for listeners aged 13 and older. The service is not directed to children under 13, and you may not use it if you are under 13. By using Folio you represent that you meet this age requirement.
4. No account required; local storage
You do not need to create an account or download anything to start listening. Folio works without a sign-in. Your preferences and listening progress are stored locally in your own browser (using localStorage on your device) rather than on our servers. Because this data lives on your device, it may be lost if you clear your browser data, switch browsers, or use a different device, and it generally will not transfer between devices.
5. Free daily allowance
One classic of your choice is free every day. Your second title in the same day is where Folio Premium begins. The free allowance resets daily. The terms of this free allowance — including how many titles are free and how the reset works — may change at our discretion.
6. Folio Premium subscription
- Price. Folio Premium is USD $24.99 per year. All prices are stated and charged in U.S. dollars.
- Free trial. Premium begins with a 7-day free trial. If you do not cancel before the trial ends, the trial converts to a paid annual subscription and you will be charged $24.99.
- Auto-renewal. After the trial, your subscription automatically renews each year at the then-current annual price until you cancel. By subscribing, you authorize this recurring annual charge.
- Billing. Payments are processed by Stripe, Inc. We never see or store your full card number. Your payment is also subject to Stripe's own terms.
7. Cancellation and refunds
You can cancel at any time within the app. If you cancel during the free trial, you will not be charged. If you cancel a paid subscription, you will not be billed again, and your Premium access continues until the end of the period you have already paid for; it does not renew after that. Except where required by applicable law, payments are non-refundable, including for partial periods.
8. Acceptable use and restrictions
Folio is licensed to you for personal, non-commercial use only. You agree not to:
- copy, record, download (beyond the app's own offline functionality), redistribute, publicly perform, broadcast, or resell Folio's audio, adaptations, artwork, or software;
- scrape, crawl, harvest, or bulk-extract content or data from the service by any automated means;
- circumvent, disable, or interfere with the paywall, the free daily allowance, billing, or any access or security controls;
- reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to derive the source code of the app, except to the extent this restriction is prohibited by law;
- use Folio in any way that is unlawful, infringing, or that disrupts or harms the service or other users.
We may suspend or restrict access to anyone who violates these Terms.
9. Intellectual property
The underlying literary texts are in the public domain. However, Folio's edited adaptations and retellings, audio recordings and narration, cover artwork, design, branding, and software are owned by Akira Takashima (or licensed to us) and are protected by intellectual-property laws. We grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to access and enjoy this material for your own personal, non-commercial use, subject to these Terms. No other rights are granted.
10. Third-party services
Folio relies on third-party providers to operate, including Stripe (payment processing) and Cloudflare (hosting, delivery, and web analytics). Your use of features provided through these services may be subject to their respective terms and privacy practices. We are not responsible for the acts, omissions, or content of third parties.
11. Disclaimers
Folio is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, to the fullest extent permitted by law. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or always available, or that content will be free of inaccuracies. Because narration is AI-generated and longer works are edited retellings, pronunciation, phrasing, and emphasis may vary and the audio may not reflect the complete original text. You use Folio at your own discretion and risk.
12. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Akira Takashima will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, goodwill, or anticipated savings, arising out of or relating to your use of (or inability to use) Folio. To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total aggregate liability for all claims relating to the service will not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid us for Folio in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) USD $50. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of these may not apply to you.
13. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Akira Takashima from any claims, damages, losses, and reasonable expenses (including legal fees) arising out of your misuse of Folio or your breach of these Terms.
14. Changes to these Terms
We may revise these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date above. Material changes will take effect when posted, and your continued use of Folio after changes take effect means you accept the revised Terms. If you do not agree to a change, please stop using the service.
15. Governing law and venue
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. You agree that any dispute relating to Folio or these Terms will be resolved exclusively in the courts located in Alberta, Canada, and you consent to their jurisdiction.
